WELCOME TO THE HOMEPAGE OF THE JIM REEVES FAN CLUB

THIS WEB SITE WAS  ENDORSED BY JIM'S LEAD GUITAR PLAYER THE LATE LEO JACKSON

Jim Reeves

Our objective is to promote the music of Jim Reeves and keep the memory of him alive. Also, we supply the members with a quarterly fan club magazine of 12  pages, full of interesting articles, album reviews, photos, etc.

The fan club was founded as THE NEW DUTCH JIM REEVES FAN CLUB by Arie den Dulk and Bert Bossink in 1975. For the first two years we catered only to Dutch speaking fans, but since the closure of the British Jim Reeves Fan Club in 1977, we have two editions of the club magazine, one in Dutch, the other in English. Some years ago we changed to our present name as for more than  25 years it has  been the only Jim Reeves fan club.

Our approximately 250 members live all over the world, but 80% are Europeans. We have members in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australasia, India and Japan.

On this website we'll put various information such as discographies, newspaper cuttings and photographs from my own and other collections. Any material from visitors to this site is welcome.

If you wish to join the fan club or would like to know more about it,  or have any questions,  please write to: The Jim Reeves Fan Club. Or you may send mail to our postal address, which is:

DOTTIE WEST HAS BEEN ELECTED TO THE COUNTRY MUSIC HALL OF FAME

Ricky Skaggs, Dottie West and Johnny Gimble are this year's inductees into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Dottie West wrote the song IS THIS ME? which Jim Reeves recorded on November 22, 1962. It became a No. 3 hit. Jim Reeves helped to secure a recording contract with RCA. Dottie recorded two duets with Jim Reeves on December 17, 1963; LOVE IS NO EXCUSE, and 'LOOK WHO'S TALKING', in a session in which the song A NICKEL PIECE OF CANDY also was recorded.

Dottie West died as the result of a car accident on September 4, 1991, at the age of 58.

The disgusting recent attack  on an American Jim Reeves Forum  indicates  total ignorance of those who were around a long time ago and accuses any visitor to the Dutch site of being a party to "Puerility." This site does not attract the childish or tout the trivial. It's been around just as long as that authoritarian "ONLY" site.

This site makes regular contributions of new information about Jim Reeves through our "Did You Know" section. We also share information about people who were associated with Jim, note most recently our coverage of the funeral of Tom Perryman.

Every year, we make sure that flowers are placed on the final resting places of Jim and Mary Reeves.  Interesting and informative articles relating to Jim Reeves appear on this site, and especially in our printed fan club magazine. All this is done without promoting any items for sale. The only thing we promote is Jim Reeves.

DID YOU KNOW LEO WAS 14 YEARS OLD WHEN HE AUDITIONED FOR JIM REEVES?!

In an interview with Leo Jackson,  which was filmed at the porch of the Jim Reeves Museum in Madison,Tennessee, for the British TVS television program "Gentleman Jim Reeves", Leo was asked when and how he met Jim Reeves. Leo told that he was short of his 15th Birthday when he was auditioned by Jim Reeves at the house of the Ross family.

If what Leo said is to be believed, and we have no reason not to believe him, citing his birth year as circa 1938, then it casts doubts on his stated birth year of 1934. It is known Jim Reeves bragged on the fact that Leo was only 15 when he joined him, but it was never taken seriously by authors and historians, and no proof of this was ever found.

Birth certificates are surely in the possession of members of Leo's family, which will shed more light on the mystery. One thing is certain - the debate is set to linger on.

 FUNERAL OF  TOM PERRYMAN

Picture: courtesy of Jack Benner

Yesterday, a celebration of life service for Tom Perryman was  held at the Stewart Family Funeral Home in Tyler, Texas. Jack Benner reported he was one of ten speakers, plus the preacher. There was a crowd of 200 plus not counting those that came just for "visitation" and left before the service. The services were video taped and can be viewed on the website of the Funeral Home. The stream runs for 95 minutes and can be viewed here.  Quite a few of the speakers not only tell  about their friendship with Tom, but also of Tom's friendship with Jim and Mary Reeves.  A few Jim Reeves songs were played during the service. The Guest Book will be online thru February 15th.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY REEVES

Today, Mary Reeves would have celebrated her 89th Birthday. Although she passed away 18 years ago, her hard work on maintaining Jim's image and his record catalogue is the reason that Jim's music still lives on, more than 50 years after his death. I can not think of any artist whose music is still popular and listened to by thousands of listeners half a century after his death.

UPDATE ON HANDWRITTEN LYRICS OF AN EARLY JIM REEVES SONG WHICH WAS AUCTIONED  ON EBAY LAST WEEK

I could not report on the auction sooner as I was in bed with the flue. I am recuperating and hope to get back to work on the fan club magazine this week.

This early handwritten lyrics did not get sold on Ebay last week, as no one bid on it. The starting bid was $200.00.

The lyrics were first auctioned, by a different seller on Ebay in March of 2004. The seller wrote: "This hand written copy came from an old 3 ring notebook that Jim used to carry his songs in. The notebook has fallen apart, but this is one of the original songs that were inside."

Fortunately, a number of lyrics from that notebook have been shared between fans. It opened a window to a part of Jim's early career.

HANDWRITTEN LYRICS OF AN EARLY JIM REEVES SONG BEING AUCTIONED  ON EBAY THIS WEEK

A few very interesting items of Jim Reeves memorabilia are being auctioned on Ebay this week. These are handwritten lyrics of an early Jim Reeves song, "Vagabond Baby".

The lyrics are the original for the song, and most likely when it came to a demo, Jim decided he didn't like the word "Vagabond" anymore and decided to change it for "Heartbreaking" which certainly doesn't agree with the original Vagabond" theme of the rest of the lyrical content.  I note there were four verses in Jim's original and only 3 in the demo. Notice the large space between the first two & last two verses of the script. This was left blank I believe, so that Jim could come up with the lyrics for a bridge sometime later. He was never very good at writing bridges which always caused him problems in those early song efforts.

On the other side of the lyrics is the typed lyrics of an Eddy Arnold song, "I couldn't believe it was true". Jim would sing it in "E" key.

Together with the lyrics, a telegram from a Mr. Stiles from Albuquerque asking for a glossy picture, and an October 1962 program book of the "Saharan" hotel in Las Vegas. Jim would play golf there occasionally.

The
auction  ends on Monday January 1, 2018.

SIX JIM REEVES SONGS IN THE DUTCH NPO RADIO 5 EVERGREEN-TOP1000 HITPARADE 2017

There are 6 Jim Reeves hits in the Dutch NPO RADIO 5 EVERGREEN TOP-1000 HITPARADE of 2017.

No. 413 Welcome To My World
No. 302 I Won't Forget You
No. 120 Adios Amigo
No. 73 He'll Have To Go
No. 66 I Love You Because
No. 62 Distant Drums

When we compare the list of last year to this one, we noticed that two Jim Reeves songs didn't make it; 'AM I LOSING YOU', and 'BIMBO'. 'DISTANT DRUMS' reached again the highest position for a Jim Reeves recording, but it had dropped from the Number 28 to 62.

The EVERGREEN - TOP1000 HITPARADE has been compiled from a NPO RADIO 5 listeners poll and is being transmitted from Monday 27 November till and including Friday 1 December, between 07.00 and 20.00 hours CET.

The program can be listened  here.

A VERY SHORT AUDIO CLIP  FROM AN ACETATE RECORDING OF JIM REEVES SINGING A SONG HE NEVER COMMERCIALLY RECORDED SURFACED

Three years ago a demo tape recording of the song, “IF I COULD COME BACK”, written by Mel Tillis and A. R. “Buck” Peddy, around 1960, surfaced and a small portion from it had been posted on the web.

A few days ago, a small portion from an acetate recording from the same demo, surfaced on the web. It is believed that both originally were part of the Jim Reeves estate. It makes one wonder what other never commercially released Jim Reeves recordings, in part or in full, will eventually surface.

RCA STUDIO B CELEBRATES 60th ANNIVERSARY

The RCA Studio B building on the corner of 17th Avenue South and Hawkins Street opened on October 29, 1957. It replaced the old Methodist Television, Radio and Film Commission studio at 1525 McGavock Street. For two decades many country and non country artists such as Jim Reeves, Chet Atkins, Hank Snow, Charly Pride, The Everly Brothers, and Elvis Presley would record their recordings in this studio, many of these became hits.  Jim Reeves first used this studio on December 12, 1957 from 18:00-22:00 hours. He recorded "I LOVE YOU MORE", "THEME OF LOVE" and "WISHFUL THINKING"

THE TENNESSEAN newspaper featured a special article on the 60th Anniversary on their website, including 21 pictures taken at the recording sessions of the only Jim Reeves' Christmas album on October 19, and 25, 1962.

Click here to  read the  TENNESSEAN newspaper article.

The building still stands and is a museum visited by many country music fans, although it is occasionally used for special recordings sessions.  In April 2003 Country Music Hall of Fame's Senior Historian Dr. John W. Rumble invited Leo Jackson, me, and two members of the fan club, for a tour of RCA Studio B. Leo has played on many Jim Reeves recording sessions, although he's been listed on only a few session sheets.

JIM REEVES ALBUM ON THE NUMBER 1 POSITION OF MOST VALUABLE COUNTRY MUSIC LP ALBUMS

The WIDE OPEN COUNTRY  website posted a list of the ten most valuable country music albums.  The Jim Reeves album ABBOTT LP5001 - JIM REEVES SINGS is at the number 1 position, it could be worth $1000, depending on the condition of the record itself and / or the sleeve!  5

In the summer of  1982 I took my original copy of that album to the British RCA headquarters in London, where it was photographed and used for the artwork of "JIM REEVES - THE ABBOTT RECORDINGS, volume 1". RCA even promoted the fan club by including the name and the address on the rear cover of volume 2. A very surprising act by RCA, since they never promoted the OFFICIAL BRITISH JIM REEVES FAN CLUB on  sleeves of the British Jim Reeves albums.

NO JIM REEVES TRIBUTE ON BUCKS BRAUN MORNING SHOW TODAY

For more than a decade Classic Country Radio carried a Jim Reeves tribute show on the Bucks Braun Morning Show. When I asked Bucks if there would be an other  tribute today, he informed me there wouldn't be one.  That's very unfortunate as a number of fans will no doubt tune in to his program today. I asked Bucks to play a Jim Reeves record for all loyal fans of Jim Reeves on his program, this morning.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE "NEW JIM REEVES"?

For almost a decade fans could buy newly overdubbed recordings of Jim Reeves by an American Indie label by mail order. Those albums got some airplay on country music radio programmes, but the general public wasn't aware of these recordings. In 2014, at the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Jim's death the British record label H&H Music released an 8 CD album of overdubbed Jim Reeves songs, "The Great Jim Reeves". It received quiet a bit of promotion on television, radio, and the Internet in Europe. This should have given the "New Jim Reeves" an enormous boost in popularity and sales.

Three years later it seems that all was to no avail. Radio stations  in Europe (and likely in the rest of the world, too) still play the "Old Jim Reeves", rather than the tracks with modern musical backing. I located copies of the 8 CD set at charity shops in Plymouth, UK, for as little as £7.50. It is very likely that the general public prefers the Jim Reeves they listened to at home when their parents or grandparents played or listened to Jim Reeves records.

The naked truth is that the original Jim Reeves recordings, usually produced by one of Nashville's all-time best producers, Chet Atkins, and with a musical arrangement by Anita Kerr, have not been  beaten by any modern version yet,  and probably never will.

I am surprised that Anita Kerr, has not yet been elected to the CMF HALL OF FAME. Ms. Kerr truly deserves it as she played a mayor part in creating THE NASHVILLE SOUND.

The 8CD Set Deluxe Edition, sells at Amazon.co.uk for £29.95 & FREE Delivery in the UK. One can order much cheaper copies of this album from other sellers at Amazon, for  around £20.00 in new and or used condition.

The album is also being offered at an American fan website for $49.99 (£38.81) plus $8.00 (£6.21) shipping. Not quite what I would consider a bargain.

JUNE FORAY, ONE OF THE PERFORMERS FROM THE 1954 USO TOUR (WHICH JIM REEVES WAS A PART OF) HAS DIED, AGED 99.

Several American news media such as NBC and Washington Post reported that one of the performers from the 1954 USO tour (which Jim Reeves was a part of) has died. June Foray was a voice over actress for many years in Hollywood, performing in cartoons such as Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Walt Disney movies. June was born as June Lucille Forer in Springfield, Mass., on Sept. 18, 1917. She died Wednesday at West Hills Hospital in Los Angeles of cardiac arrest. She was 99 years old.

Bud Widow interviewed the performers of the 1954 USO Tour during the tour, The interviews were recorded on tape and sent to Hollywood. There they were transcribed for Bud's program Bud's Bandwagon, a 30 minute program transmitted by American Forces Radio. Bud interviewed June too and at the end of the interview June performed "live" in a detective story of "Little Red Riding Hood".

I was privileged to have access, and listen to these interviews with are in custody of the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Listening to the interviews helped me to write an article about the 1954 USO tour. It was published in two issues of the Jim Reeves fan club magazine in 2015.

The interview with Jim Reeves is believed to be the first one of Jim Reeves transmitted outside the USA. Unfortunately no record company has taken a license from the University of Missouri-Kansas City yet,  to release the interview on a CD.
