WELCOME TO THE HOMEPAGE OF THE JIM REEVES FAN CLUB

THIS WEB SITE WAS  ENDORSED BY JIM'S LEAD GUITAR PLAYER THE LATE LEO JACKSON

Jim Reeves

Our objective is to promote the music of Jim Reeves and keep the memory of him alive. Also, we supply the members with a quarterly fan club magazine of 12  pages, full of interesting articles, album reviews, photos, etc.

The fan club was founded as THE NEW DUTCH JIM REEVES FAN CLUB by Arie den Dulk and Bert Bossink in 1975. For the first two years we catered only to Dutch speaking fans, but since the closure of the British Jim Reeves Fan Club in 1977, we have two editions of the club magazine, one in Dutch, the other in English. Some years ago we changed to our present name as for more than  25 years it has  been the only Jim Reeves fan club.

Our approximately 250 members live all over the world, but 80% are Europeans. We have members in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Australasia, India and Japan.

On this website we'll put various information such as discographies, newspaper cuttings and photographs from my own and other collections. Any material from visitors to this site is welcome.

If you wish to join the fan club or would like to know more about it,  or have any questions,  please write to: The Jim Reeves Fan Club. Or you may send mail to our postal address, which is:

The Nashville Tennessean newspaper reported about the recent Jim Reeves' Estate court case; 'Epic, strange battle over Jim Reeves' music may be almost over.'  The article gives a fair, concise  and unbiased account of the events surrounding and matters pertaining to the various court cases.  The reporter interviewed Ames Davis, who administrates the Mary Reeves-Davis Estate and lawyers representing Terry Davis and the Reeves' heirs.  Despite jubilant claims of victory on another non official fan website it seems the dispute between Terry Davis and the Reeves' heirs for the estate is not over yet.  In October, the heirs will go to court again.

A RARE AUDIO CLIP OF JIM REEVES INTRODUCING THE REECE SISTERS

On the website of the Reece Sisters there's an audio clip of Jim Reeves introducing them on the Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree Show.

After winning a Pet Milk Grand Old Opry Talent Contest in 1961 they recorded two country songs on the Starday label.  On June 15, 1962  the Reece Sisters went  to cut two country songs for the Starday label. Among the studio musicians were Dean Manuel on piano, and Pete Drake on steel guitar.  The songs recorded were:  'Leave It Alone'   and  "'A Memory And A Broken Heart' .

A picture taken at the Starday studio can be found
here

They were invited to appear on the Grand Ole Opry the next day on June 16, 1962. There were too many stars in town that weekend so they were very blessed that night with an appearance with Jim Reeves on the Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree  which immediately follows the Grand Ole Opry Show and was broadcast from the Ernest Tubb Record Shop. Jim Reeves introduced them that night and they sang  " I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU" .  Their mother taped their portion of the show from the radio, back home in Lexington, South Carolina.

Oscar visited concerts of many famous foreign rock bands such as the Rolling Stones and The Beatles when they performed in his hometown The Hague. He also took a number of pictures during the show. The results of his  photography can be found in the book  enclosed with the BEAR FAMILY CD box set  'NASHVILLE STARS ON EUROPEAN TOUR'.

THIRD ANNIVERSARY OF LEO JACKSON'S DEATH

On this day three years ago, we heard the sad news about the passing of Leo Jackson.  For ten years Leo played lead guitar for Jim Reeves.  There is little doubt that Leo's  guitar playing contributed to the unique sound of  many Jim Reeves recordings.

Leo will also be remembered  for relentless promoting of Jim Reeves' music and history in radio programs and interviews over the years . He once told me it was his greatest wish to see his memories about Jim Reeves in print.  That wish will one day come true.

As a tribute to Leo,  Tom Perryman played, on my request,  'Penny Candy' on his radio show at KKUS 'The Ranch' today. 'Penny Candy' was the first Jim Reeves record, Leo played on after being hired by Jim a few months earlier in May of 1954.

PHILIP SOLOMON DIES AT AGE 85

Belfast born promoter Philip Solomon died on April 10 in Bournemouth, UK. He would have celebrated his 87th Birthday on April 27.  He was suffering from poor health for a number of years. Mr. Solomon hired Jim Reeves for a tour in Ireland in 1963. Unfortunately the tour wasn't to  be a happy one for Jim Reeves, the pianos were usually out of tune or even some strings were missing, Jim and the band had to do two shows in different venues at some distance from each other on the same night.  Two shows had even to be cancelled due to the death of Pope John XXIII on May 11, 1963.   Irish journalist James Reddiough has written a 25 page booklet about that Jim Reeves tour.

JEAN SHEPARD INDUCTED TO THE HALL OF FAME

Jean Shepard has been one of three persons inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year.  For many years she has been known as "The Grand Lady Of Country Music". She was the widow  of Hawkshaw  Hawkins who was killed in the aircrash that also killed Cowboy Copas and  Patsy Cline in 1963. She has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry for 50 years.

Jim Reeves held her in high esteem and made this comment:
"All the girl singers should sound like Jean Shepard. She always hits her notes, holds them and wraps them around an audience like nobody else can."

In her Thank you speech she reminded the  induction committee that other artists such as Jimmy C.  Newman, The Browns, Stonewa
ll Jackson and others deserve to be inducted too.

This year's other two inductees are singer Reba McEntire and songwriter Bobby Braddock.

"RARE"  ABBOTT STRING MUSIC SHOW 78 RPM ACETATE LISTED ON EBAY FOR $ 21,000,000.00!

A 'rare' 10" , 78 rpm acetate promo spot of the ABBOTT STRING MUSIC SHOW is being auctioned on Ebay. The radio promo spot contains  excerpts of records by Jim Reeves,  and the The Browns, and the announcer also names other participants of the show.

The CD JIM REEVES - THE HAYRIDE YEARS, released on the TKO Magnum label in Britain, contains  a different promo spot for the Louisiana Hayride made by their own disc jockeys, most likely using utilizing some of the snippets from the original acetate.  That recording has poor sound quality. (my sincere thanks to both David Bussey and Bob Chudicek for  corrections)

CHARLIE LOUVIN DIES AT AGE  83

Charlie Louvin died at 1:30 a.m. this morning from complications stemming from his bout with pancreatic cancer. Details about visitation and the funeral will be announced later.

Charles Elzer Loudermilk, aka  Charlie Louvin, was born  on July 7, 1927 in Henagar, Alabama. He was a cousin of singer and songwriter John D. Loudermilk.

Charlie and his brother Ira formed  the  famous duo ' The Louvin Brothers' . They became members of the ' Grand Ole Opry'   in  1955, the same year Jim joined. The duo split up in 1963.

The Louvin Brothers appeared together with Jim Reeves on many shows.  On one of those tours they performed with other 'Opry' members in Canada in the late Fifties. Jim was quite impressed by the performances by the Louvin Brothers. In a letter to Mary, written in a hotel Jim was staying, he wrote: "...the Louvins  have been good company . They are terrific as people and entertainers too" ( courtesy Frank C. Anderson)

I had the pleasure to see and hear Charlie, together with Charles Whitstein  perform at  a show in The Netherlands on 31st May 1993. It was later released on CD. After the show I interviewed Charlie about his memories of Jim Reeves. The interview has been published in the fan club magazine .

'I'LL FLY AWAY' COURT CASE RULING

In today's edition of his radio program Tom Perryman reported about a court case over the rights of Albert Brumley's composition  'I'LL FLY AWAY'.

As reported in an article in an issue of a recent  fan club magazine, Albert Brumley, who died in 1977,  got the idea for the song while picking cotton on his parent's  farm in 1929. It is believed to be  one of the most recorded gospel songs. Jim Reeves recorded it for the album 'WE THANK THEE' in RCA's famous Studio B on January 29th, 1962.

A number of members of Albert's  family were disputing over the rights to the song with another member of the family and two music companies.   The court decided in favour of the family members.

ISSUE No. 122 OF FAN CLUB MAGAZINE

In this issue we published  two pictures we had received from a fan a number of  years ago, they once belonged to Jim and Mary. They are labelled 'Tom Reeves' and  'Beulah Reeves' on the back of each picture.

Ms. Lani Arnold, Jim's  niece sent  a letter to us with these comments:  " I find it real hard to believe that the pictures are of Mary Beulah and Tom Reeves. My mother and sister Louie never saw a picture of their Dad. My Grandmother never had a picture of him. I can't believe it's a picture of her Grandmother since her father left the family and her Mother had to raise her alone and they didn't have much money. She seems to have a nice hair barrett and pearls on. Did you ever see the picture of my Grandmother, Mom, Jim and Uncle Alton? The background is an old dirty quirt. This just doesn't add up. "

Those two are not just ordinary pictures, but two people dressed up in their finest clothes for possibly a special occasion. It is unknown if all of  the children of Tom and  Beulah inherited copies of all the family pictures.

A member of White  family, Mary's maiden name was White,  who had read  the article in the fan club magazine stated he didn't recognize the people in  the pictures.

BEFORE AND AFTER

This is the result of recent digital color correction a faded color picture of and Jimmy Latham, Jim Reeves, and  Leo Jackson.  It was taken during the week of August 20, 1954 since Jim is holding a wrapped Birthday present in his hands. The present was likely a gift from Jackie Holler, his fan club president. Jimmy Latham played steel guitar on " Penny Candy", Leo Jackson played lead guitar on the same song. This was Leo's first recording session with Jim.
